The Complete Guide to Aveda Invati Ultra Advanced™: Every Product, How They Work Together, and Who Each One Is For

If you’ve been quietly worrying about how much hair is in your brush, your shower drain, or your pillowcase, you’re in good company. Hair thinning is one of the most common concerns we hear at Belt Salon — from women in their 30s navigating postpartum shedding, to clients in midlife noticing a wider part, to anyone whose ponytail just doesn’t feel as full as it used to.

For more than a decade, Aveda’s answer to thinning hair has been the Invati family. The current generation — Invati Ultra Advanced™ — is the most clinically robust version yet, and it’s the line we reach for most often at our Bradenton and Parrish/Palmetto locations.

This guide is the long version: every product in the Invati Ultra Advanced lineup, what each one actually does, how to know which one belongs in your routine, and where it fits into the bigger picture of healthy-hair care. We’ll also link out to our individual product deep-dives so you can read more on the ones that catch your eye.

Aveda Invati Advanced

What Is Invati Ultra Advanced?

Invati Ultra Advanced is Aveda’s flagship system for thinning hair. It’s built around a 4-step (or 5-step, if you add the styling foam) routine that targets thinning from three angles at once:

Scalp health — clearing the follicle environment so hair has the best possible foundation to grow from.

Instant thickness — plumping each individual strand so hair looks and feels denser the very first time you use it.

Breakage reduction — strengthening fragile strands so the hair you already have stays on your head longer.

The headline result: a 77% reduction in hair loss due to breakage when the full 4-step system is used together. That’s the number Aveda built the line around, and it’s based on a repeat grooming test on tresses after using all four steps as a routine.

The system comes in two formulations — Light and Rich — so it works whether your hair is fine and your scalp leans oily, or your hair is thicker and your scalp leans dry. More on choosing between them in a moment.

The Botanical Backbone: What’s Inside Every Invati Product

Before we get into the individual products, it’s worth knowing what they have in common. Every Invati Ultra Advanced formula is built around Aveda’s follicle vitality complex, a blend designed to support a healthy follicle environment. The hero ingredients show up across the line:

Ayurvedic herb blend — ginseng, certified organic turmeric, ginger, alpinia, and others that invigorate the scalp when massaged in.

Eclipta, alpinia, and ginger — the core of the follicle vitality complex.

Wintergreen-derived salicylic acid — the gentle exfoliant in the shampoo step.

Organic amla — a CO2-extracted fruit ingredient that helps thicken the appearance of each strand.

Rice protein — forms a lightweight, flexible layer around each strand to instantly boost diameter.

Every product is also vegan, Leaping Bunny approved, silicone-free, sulfate-free, and free from parabens, mineral oils, and synthetic fragrances. The signature aroma — lavender, clary sage, Australian sandalwood, and vanilla — comes from Aveda’s Pure-Fume™ blend of pure plant and flower essences. The vanilla, by the way, is blockchain-traced from organic farms in Madagascar all the way to Aveda’s manufacturing facility in Blaine, Minnesota — which runs on 100% wind power.

Light vs. Rich: The First Choice You’ll Make

Before you pick any individual product, you’ll choose a lane — Light or Rich. This is the single most important decision in the whole routine, because the rest of the system flows from it.

Choose Light if…

• Your hair texture is fine to medium.• Your scalp leans normal to oily.• You wash frequently and want something that rinses clean and airy.• Conditioner can weigh your hair down.

Choose Rich if…

• Your hair texture is medium to thick.

• Your scalp leans normal to dry.

• You want a creamier lather and more nourishment.

• You’ve struggled with frizz, dryness, or coarse texture in addition to thinning.

Rich versions have 50% more conditioning ingredients than Light versions. If you’re honestly not sure which is right for you, ask your stylist on your next visit — we’ll feel your hair and look at your scalp and tell you in about 30 seconds. We carry both at our Bradenton location and our Parrish/Palmetto location.

Aveda Invati Advanced

The Invati Ultra Advanced Lineup, Product by Product

Here’s every product in the line, in the order you’d use them. Each one has a job, and the routine only delivers the full 77% breakage reduction when you use the four core steps together.

Step 1: Exfoliating Shampoo

The first step is about clearing the slate. The Exfoliating Shampoo uses wintergreen-derived salicylic acid to gently lift away the oil, sweat, hard-water minerals, sunscreen residue, and product buildup that clog follicles over time. A clean, clear follicle is what every other step in the system depends on — you can’t fortify and revitalize ground you haven’t cleared first.

The Light version creates a frothy, airy lather and rinses out completely — great for fine hair and oily scalps. The Rich version has 50% more conditioning ingredients and produces a creamier lather that leaves hair feeling clean but not stripped — better for medium-to-thick hair and drier scalps. Both are gentle enough for daily use and safe on color-treated hair.

Step 2: Thickening Conditioner

This is the step where hair starts to feel different right away. The Thickening Conditioner uses a botanical plumping blend — organic amla and rice protein lead the cast — to wrap each strand in a lightweight, flexible layer that increases its diameter from root to tip. The result is hair that feels denser the first time you use it, with measurable improvements that build over weeks of consistent use.

It also detangles fragile strands so you’re not yanking through tangles in the shower (a common cause of thinning-hair breakage). Light is for fine-to-medium hair with a normal-to-oily scalp; Rich is for medium-to-thick hair with a normal-to-dry scalp and brings 50% more conditioning agents to the party.

Step 3: Revitalizing Scalp Serum

Step 3 is the one most people skip — and it’s the one that often makes the biggest long-term difference. The Revitalizing Scalp Serum is a leave-in treatment applied directly to a clean, towel-dried scalp. It’s built around Aveda’s follicle vitality complex of eclipta, alpinia, and ginger, and it works on three fronts:

Neutralizes oxidative stressors on the scalp — things like pollution and UV that disrupt the follicle environment.

Strengthens and protects follicles at the source.

Invigorates the scalp — you’ll feel a gentle tingle when you massage it in. It also helps lift hair at the root, which adds visible volume.

Unlike Steps 1 and 2, there’s no Light/Rich split here — one Revitalizing Scalp Serum works for both systems. Use it once a day, after washing, and don’t rinse it out.

Step 4: Fortifying Leave-In Treatment

Step 4 protects everything you’ve just done. The Fortifying Leave-In Treatment is a strengthening spray that detangles damp hair, reduces frizz for up to 24 hours, and provides heat protection up to 450°F — which matters if you blow-dry, flat-iron, or curl. It also adds resilience to the hair cuticle, stabilizing thinning fibers from root to tip so the hair you have is harder to break.

This is the unsung hero of the system. It’s an award winner for a reason — if you can only add one product on top of shampoo and conditioner, this is the one that delivers the most noticeable day-to-day benefit. Like the scalp serum, there’s no Light/Rich split.

The Bonus Step: Thickening Foam

The Thickening Foam isn’t one of the four core steps, but it’s the styling product that turns a great routine into a great style. Add it to damp hair after Step 4, blow-dry, and you get hair that feels up to 11% thicker — the equivalent of about 11,000 more strands on your head.

It also reduces frizz, adds flexible all-day hold without crunchiness or buildup, and protects from blow-drying heat. The pro tip from Aveda’s Global Artistic Director: pump the foam directly onto your round brush and run it through damp hair. You get a more even root-to-tip distribution that way than you do working it through with your hands.

The Shortcut: Buy the System

If reading through all of that feels like a lot, here’s the simpler version — you can buy the full 4-step system as a single bundle in either Light or Rich. You’ll save money over buying each piece individually, and you’re guaranteed to have everything you need to hit the 77% breakage-reduction result.

A Sample Daily Routine

Here’s what a real Invati day looks like:

In the shower:

• Wet hair thoroughly. Apply Exfoliating Shampoo to your scalp, massage for 30–60 seconds, then rinse.• Apply Thickening Conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes while you finish the rest of your shower, then rinse thoroughly.

Out of the shower, on a towel-dried scalp:

• Section your hair and apply Revitalizing Scalp Serum directly to your scalp. Massage it in with your fingertips for about a minute — the tingle is the formula activating. Don’t rinse.• Spray Fortifying Leave-In Treatment evenly through damp lengths. Comb through to detangle.

When styling:

• Pump 3–5 doses of Thickening Foam onto your round brush. Blow-dry as usual, working from roots to ends.

The whole routine adds maybe two minutes to a normal wash day. The compounding payoff over weeks and months is where the real difference shows up.

How Long Until You See Results?

Three different timelines, depending on what you’re measuring:

Instant. The thickening effect from the conditioner, leave-in, and foam shows up the first time you use them. You’ll feel the difference in your hair the same day.

4 weeks. Aveda’s consumer testing on 103 women using the Light system showed visible scalp and hair improvements at the four-week mark.

8–12 weeks. The full reduction in breakage and the deeper follicle-environment benefits build over a full hair-growth cycle. This is where the 77% number lives, and it’s why consistency matters.

The honest answer: Invati works best when it’s the routine, not the experiment. Skipping steps or using it twice a week won’t deliver the result.

Pairing Invati with Professional Services

Home care is one side of the equation. What we do in the chair is the other side — and the two work better together than either does alone. A few services that pair particularly well with the Invati system:

Keratin treatments at our Bradenton location strengthen existing strands and reduce breakage between washes — a direct complement to what Invati is doing on the follicle side.

A precision haircut tailored for fine or thinning hair can transform how dense your hair looks while Invati works on actual density.

Hair extensions near Lakewood Ranch are an option some clients consider while they’re building up their natural hair — we use methods designed to be gentle on existing strands.

A scalp consultation at Belt Salon Bradenton or our Parrish/Palmetto location — our Aveda-certified stylists can look at your scalp and hair, ask the right questions, and tell you exactly which Invati variant to start with.

Other Aveda Lines Worth Knowing About

Invati is the right answer for clients whose primary concern is thinning or breakage. But Aveda has a few other lines that come up in the same conversations, and it’s worth knowing where the boundaries are.

Aveda Scalp Solutions targets scalp health more broadly — great if your scalp feels imbalanced, flaky, or stressed, but thinning isn’t your top concern.

Aveda Pure Abundance is for fuller, thicker hair when the issue is volume and body rather than active thinning.

Aveda Damage Remedy is the line for breakage from heat, color, and chemical damage rather than from thinning.

If you’re not sure which line fits your situation, that’s exactly the kind of question a stylist consultation is built to answer.

FAQ

What is Aveda Invati Ultra Advanced?

Invati Ultra Advanced is Aveda’s flagship system for thinning hair. It’s a 4-step routine — exfoliating shampoo, thickening conditioner, revitalizing scalp serum, and fortifying leave-in treatment — that reduces hair loss due to breakage by 77% when used together. A thickening foam is available as a fifth styling step.

Does Invati Ultra Advanced really work?

The 77% reduction in hair loss due to breakage is based on a repeat grooming test on tresses after using all four steps of the system. Consumer testing on 103 women using the Light system for four weeks showed visible improvements in scalp and hair condition. Results compound over a full hair-growth cycle, so consistent use over 8–12 weeks is where the biggest changes show up.

What’s the difference between Invati Ultra Advanced Light and Rich?

Light is designed for fine-to-medium thinning hair and normal-to-oily scalps. It produces a frothy lather and rinses clean. Rich is designed for medium-to-thick thinning hair and normal-to-dry scalps, with 50% more conditioning ingredients and a creamier lather. The Revitalizing Scalp Serum and Fortifying Leave-In Treatment are the same for both systems.

How long does it take to see results from Invati?

The instant thickening effect from the conditioner, leave-in, and foam shows up the first day you use them. Visible scalp and hair improvements typically appear around 4 weeks. The full 77% reduction in breakage develops over 8–12 weeks of consistent daily use.

Is Invati Ultra Advanced safe for color-treated hair?

Yes. Every product in the Invati Ultra Advanced line is sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, and color-safe. It’s a strong choice for clients who get color services and want to protect that investment while they address thinning.

Can I skip steps in the Invati system?

You can — but the 77% breakage-reduction number only applies to the full 4-step routine. If you have to prioritize, the most-skipped-but-most-important step is Step 3 (the scalp serum). It’s the one that targets the follicle environment directly. Step 4 (the leave-in) is the runner-up on impact.

Is Invati Ultra Advanced vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. Every product in the line is 100% vegan, Leaping Bunny Approved, and free from parabens, mineral oils, and synthetic fragrances. Manufacturing happens at Aveda’s primary facility in Blaine, Minnesota, which runs on 100% wind power.

Where can I buy Invati Ultra Advanced near Bradenton or Palmetto?

We carry the full Invati Ultra Advanced line at both Belt Salon locations — Belt Salon Bradenton and Belt Salon Parrish/Palmetto. Stop in for a scalp consultation, and we’ll match you to the right system, or shop online through any of the links above.

This was such a helpful breakdown of the Aveda Invati Ultra Advanced line! I completely understand your point about struggling with a complete guide at first; I often feel overwhelmed by so many product options and their specific uses. It made me realize I might have been using the wrong serum for my hair type https://www.afp.gov.au/crimes/cybercrime Thinking back, I used a different brand's intensive treatment for months and saw minimal results, which is why I'm so curious about how a targeted approach like this makes a difference. Honestly, I'd love to…
