Hair Extensions FAQ — Your Questions Answered
Considering hair extensions for the first time? We hear many of the same questions from new clients at Belt Salon. Here are honest, detailed answers to help you make an informed decision about your extension journey.
General Hair Extension Questions
How long do hair extensions last?
Extension lifespan depends on the method and how well you maintain them. Tape-in extensions need move-ups every 6–8 weeks, with the hair lasting up to 12 months. Hand-tied and IBE extensions need maintenance every 8–10 weeks. Keratin bonds last 3–5 months between reinstallation. The extension hair itself can last 9–12+ months with proper care.
Do hair extensions damage your natural hair?
When installed by a trained professional and maintained on schedule, modern hair extensions should not damage your natural hair. Damage typically occurs when extensions are left in too long without maintenance, installed by an inexperienced stylist, or removed incorrectly. At Belt Salon, all of our extension specialists are professionally certified and follow strict protocols to protect your natural hair.
Which type of extension is best for me?
The best extension method depends on your natural hair type, lifestyle, and goals. Tape-ins are great for first-timers and fine hair. Hand-tied extensions offer premium volume for medium-thick hair. IBE is the gentlest option for fine or thinning hair. Keratin bonds offer maximum versatility and longevity. A free consultation at Belt Salon is the best way to determine your perfect method.
How much do hair extensions cost?
Extension pricing varies based on the method, amount of hair needed, and length desired. We offer a range of options to fit different budgets. A complimentary consultation will give you an exact quote based on your specific needs and goals.
Can I color or highlight my extensions?
You can color 100% Remy human hair extensions, but we recommend having it done at the salon by your stylist. This ensures the color is applied safely without affecting the attachment points. If you want a color change, discuss it with your stylist during your consultation — color matching can often be done during installation.
Can I wash, swim, and exercise with extensions?
Yes to all three. We recommend waiting 48 hours after installation before washing, and using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. For swimming, wet your hair and apply leave-in conditioner before entering the pool or ocean. For exercise, secure your hair in a loose braid.
How long does extension installation take?
Installation time varies by method. Tape-ins take about 60–90 minutes. Hand-tied and IBE installations take 2–3 hours. Keratin bonds take 2–4 hours for a full head. Maintenance appointments are typically shorter.
Do extensions work on short hair?
Extensions can be applied to hair as short as 4–6 inches in many cases, though 6+ inches provides the best blending results. During your consultation, your stylist will evaluate your hair length and recommend whether extensions are a good fit or if it’s better to grow your hair a bit longer first.
What is Remy hair, and why does it matter?
Remy hair is the highest quality human hair used in extensions. The cuticles remain intact and aligned in the same direction, which prevents tangling and matting. This gives Remy hair a natural shine, soft texture, and much longer lifespan than non-Remy or synthetic alternatives. Belt Salon exclusively uses 100% Remy human hair.
What happens during a hair extension consultation?
During your free consultation at Belt Salon, your stylist will assess your natural hair thickness, texture, and condition. You’ll discuss your desired length, volume, and style goals. Your stylist will recommend the best extension method, show you color options, explain the installation process and timeline, and provide an exact price quote. Consultations typically last 20–30 minutes.
