Aveda Control Paste — The Finishing Product Every Hairstyle Needs

Most people own shampoo, conditioner, maybe a heat protectant. But the product that actually makes the difference between “I did my hair” and “my hair looks professionally styled” is a good finishing paste. Aveda Control Paste is the one Belt Salon stylists reach for more than almost any other product in the backbar. It’s that versatile.

Control Paste is a lightweight styling paste that provides flexible hold with a natural, non-greasy finish. It defines texture, tames flyaways, smooths ends, and adds piecey definition without making hair look or feel like it has product in it. That invisible-product quality is what makes it special — your hair looks like it naturally falls perfectly into place.

What Makes Control Paste Different From Other Styling Products

Most pastes, pomades, and waxes fall into two categories: either they’re so light they do nothing, or they’re so heavy your hair looks greasy and weighed down. Control Paste sits in a rare middle ground. It has enough hold to keep flyaways down and define texture, but it’s light enough that you can run your hands through your hair and it still moves naturally.

The formula uses organic flax seed and organic jojoba oil to create pliable hold without stiffness. Your hair stays touchable all day. There’s no crunch, no sticky residue, and no buildup if you use it daily. It’s also humidity-resistant, which is essential in Florida where frizz is a year-round battle.

How to Use Control Paste

For Short Hair and Men’s Styles

Rub a small amount (pea-sized) between your palms until it’s evenly distributed, then work through dry or slightly damp hair. Shape and define as needed. For textured, piecey looks, twist small sections between your fingers. For a smoother, more polished style, smooth it over the surface with flat palms. Control Paste gives short hairstyles that effortless, I-woke-up-like-this quality.

For Medium to Long Hair

Use it as a finishing touch after blow-drying or air-drying. Take a tiny amount — less than you think you need — and smooth over the top layer to tame flyaways and frizz. Work a little through the ends to add definition and prevent them from looking dry or ragged. It’s also excellent for smoothing the front hairline and baby hairs without making them look plastered down.

For Updos and Braids

Apply before creating updos, braids, or ponytails to give hair more grip and reduce slippage. It helps bobby pins hold better, keeps braids neater for longer, and smooths the surface of ponytails without the wet look that gels create. Our stylists at Belt Salon use it extensively during bridal styling for exactly this reason.

Control Paste vs. Other Aveda Styling Products

Aveda makes several styling products, and they each have a specific role. Confixor is a liquid gel for wet styling and hold. Phomollient is a mousse for volume on fine hair. Texture Tonic is a salt spray for beachy waves. Control Paste is the finisher — the last product you apply to polish, define, and perfect whatever style you’ve created. It works after any of those other products, or completely on its own.

Where to Get Aveda Control Paste

Frequently Asked Questions About Aveda Control Paste

Aveda Control Paste blissful pure-fume aroma with plant-derived ingredients

How much Control Paste should I use?

Less than you think. Start with a pea-sized amount for short hair and a slightly larger amount for long hair. You can always add more, but too much can make hair look oily. Rub it completely between your palms before applying so it distributes evenly. The most common mistake is using too much, too concentrated in one area.

Does Control Paste work on all hair types?

Yes. It works on straight, wavy, curly, fine, thick, and coarse hair. The application technique changes based on your hair type, but the product itself is universally effective. Fine hair benefits from a very light application on the surface only. Thick or coarse hair can handle more product worked through from mid-shaft to ends.

Will Control Paste make my hair look greasy?

Not if you use the right amount. Control Paste has a matte-to-natural finish, not a shiny or greasy one. If your hair looks greasy after applying, you’ve used too much. Scale back to half the amount and focus the application on the ends and surface rather than the roots.

Can I restyle my hair during the day with Control Paste?

Yes, that’s one of its best features. The hold is flexible and re-workable, so you can reshape your style throughout the day without adding more product. Just run your fingers through and rearrange. This makes it ideal for people who shift between professional and casual looks during the day.

Does Control Paste wash out easily?

It washes out completely with regular shampoo. There’s no buildup or residue, even with daily use. Unlike wax-based products that can take multiple washes to remove, Control Paste is water-soluble and rinses clean.
